Rafael Lozano-Hemmer has become exceptionally well-known over the past few years for his large-scale interactive installations for public spaces. A Canadian of Mexican origin who lives in Montreal, he has exhibited his work in some twenty countries and has won numerous awards, including the prestigious Golden Nica in the Interactive Art category at Ars Electronica in 2000. A scientist by training, he creates specially designed physical interfaces for his projects. Lozano-Hemmer's interactive installation Frequency and Volume/Relational Architecture 9 is a synthesis of his work, both artistic and political, calling into question the occupation of territory and the democratization of technology, while also involving the viewer, who becomes in this way a protagonist of the work. By moving through shadows projected onto a wall, the viewer can tune into a radio frequency according to his or her position in space, and (along with other viewers) compose a symphonic sound environment. This piece explores the city's radio spectrum, from short wave to cellular telephones. It questions the rise of bodily surveillance, which is increasingly seen as an antennae of public communication. Frequency and Volume/Relational Architecture 9 is distinguished by its innovative and politically engaged nature. Expert at Large : Danièle Racine
Danièle Racine is currently programmer of the "new media" section of the Montreal International Festival of New Cinema and New Media (FCMM). She has worked with numerous cultural groups, including the Société des arts technologiques (SAT), La Centrale, Zone Productions, and Vidéographe. She has made two video documentaries on the use of communication technologies in the arts: Tempo réseau (2002), and Mouvement réel (1999).
